Aubrey Doodlepants Longies Pattern
I have knit the Aubrey doodlepants free longies pattern twice. I was a beginner knitter when I tried it, and I found it easy.
The things I like about this pattern is that it gives the required gauge and suggested yarn and needle size, but you are supposed to measure your child and make the rise, waist and leg length the appropriate size. The author has a paid service where she will convert the pattern to your measurements if you are having trouble with the maths. The pattern author has an excellent free site that gives a "knitting 101" and explains all of the relevant knitting skills needed to try the pattern.
The main problem for me was that there were no guidelines for what an appropriate size for different ages would be, so I made a pair of longies that lasted only a short time before my boy grew out of them. Secondly, the grafting at the crotch does not seal the crotch properly, leaving holes at each side of the grafting. Other knitters explained to me how to pick up some stitches in the crotch, which fixes the problem, as does darning it closed but the pattern doesn't explain how to do this.

In a nutshell... the Aubrey Doodlepants longies pattern is nice and easy for beginners, but does need short rows and gets holes at the crotch if you follow the pattern. However with a couple of modifications, it works really well. I added a gusset, which helps with the holes at the legs, or else you can darn up the holes when you graft the crotch together. :)
